Academic Affairs Mission Statement

The mission of Academic Affairs is to promote a culture of academic excellence as this is integral to both the institutional mission and strategic plan of Siena University. Informed by the Siena Learning Goals and outcomes-based decision making, the Office supports a student-centered focus in all academic departments, co-curricular programs, and academic support services. Faculty members are supported as teachers and scholars as they prepare students for further study and professional accomplishment. Committed to the Franciscan and liberal arts traditions, Academic Affairs encourages concern for the welfare of humanity, dedication to public service, and an awareness of the social issues confronting a diverse global society.

Welcome from the Provost and Senior Vice President

Welcome to Siena University, a Franciscan community of scholars. Our university values intellectual curiosity, academic rigor, respectful dialogue, and the belief that education should prepare students not only for successful careers but for deeply satisfying lives of purpose and fulfillment.

Every day, I have the privilege of watching our vibrant learning community. I see faculty who challenge students to read and write extensively, to analyze carefully, and to think critically. I see students discover new passions, reconsider long-held assumptions, and grow into thoughtful, engaged citizens capable of navigating an increasingly complex world.

Within this scholarly community, faculty guide students through difficult academic questions to develop the judgement to make sound decisions, the confidence to solve problems independently, and the resilience to continue learning long after graduation. We want our students to become self-reliant adults who are prepared to think for themselves, lead with integrity, serve others generously, and contribute meaningfully to their professions and communities. - Chris Farnan, Ph.D.
