ACADEMICS

  • Register for general biology + lab  1 and 2, general chemistry + lab 1 and 2, and a mathematics course (calculus 1 or statistics).
  • Develop good study habits. Read “Make it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning” by Brown, Roediger, and McDaniel prior to arriving on campus.
  •
  • Meet with the Director of Health Professions to discuss your goals and get advice.
  •
  • Join the “Siena Health Professions” Google Group to get regular updates on events, timelines, and opportunities for aspiring health professionals.
  • Get to know your faculty. Visit office hours.
  • Matriculated Siena College students have access to Dr. White's Health Professions website that is updated regularly with information about applications, workshops, requirements, interviews with alumni, and advice.

HEALTH CARE EXPERIENCE

  • Explore  health professions. www.explorehealthcareers.com is a valuable resource.
  • Start to think about how you may obtain shadowing and/or clinical experience during the summer.
  • Think about becoming an emergency medical technician, patient care associate, or other clinically related job/volunteer opportunity.
  • Think about where you might do undergraduate research.

NON-ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

  • Attend academic events and talks. Most Schools and departments have a lecture series that is open to all community members.
  • Focus on activities and clubs that mean something to you but don’t over commit. Ask yourself, if given the choice between a physician who aced her science classes and joined a couple of clubs that were important to her or a physician who had mediocre grades but was the president of 10 clubs, who would you choose to treat you?
