ACADEMICS

  • Excel in your academic coursework. (MD and DO programs have mean GPA scores for accepted students around 3.5).
  • Sign up to take BIOL 490 Prep for Health Professions course (1 credit). 
  • In the spring, interview with the Health Professions Recommendation Committee if you plan to attend medical, dental or optometry schools.
  • Develop a study plan for your MCAT, DAT, OAT, GRE, etc.
  • Prepare for and plan to take the MCAT, DAT, OAT, GRE, or other required exams in the spring or early summer following your junior year.
  • During the fall and early spring semesters, discuss letters of recommendation with faculty who know you well.
  • Begin drafting, revising, and editing your personal statement. You will need this for the BIOL 490 if you choose to take it and the Health Professions Recommendation Committee.
  • Matriculated Siena College students have access to Dr. White's Health Professions website that is updated regularly with information about applications, workshops, requirements, interviews with alumni, and advice.

HEALTH CARE EXPERIENCE

  • Expand your health care-related activities.  Professional schools seek students with both breadth and depth of experience in healthcare.

NON-ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

  • Continue involvement in student groups and/or community service and volunteer programs.
  • Leadership roles within a group or organization are also important.
