When do we find out about our roommate?
You’ll find out who your roommate is when you receive your housing assignment in late July or early August. Keep in mind, roommate assignments are subject to change before move-in.
Are freshmen dorms doubles?
Most freshman dorms have double-occupancy rooms. Ryan Hall features primarily doubles with a few quad-style rooms. Hines Hall includes traditional doubles, triples and quad-style rooms. Plassmann Hall offers double rooms along with 4-person and 6-person suites. Learn more here.
What’s the best freshman dorm?
It really comes down to personal preference. Each residence hall offers a different experience. If you ask an upperclassman which is best, they’ll likely say their own!
Can we put curtains, LED lights, rugs, or risers in the dorms?
Rugs, risers, and battery powered lights are allowed in the dorms. However, curtains and LED lights are not allowed.
Are the dorm beds lofted or adjustable?
In traditional double rooms, beds are adjustable. In triples, quads, and 6-person suites, beds are typically lofted to maximize space.
How do you mount things on dorm walls?
Sticky tack or Command strips/hooks—both are approved and won’t damage the walls. Avoid nails, screws, or anything that leaves marks.
When will we get our schedule?
Your class schedule for the fall at Siena College will become available in mid to late July, viewable via Banner Self Service under Student Services → Registration → View Schedule by Day and Time
Do we make our schedule or is it given to us?
At Siena College, your fall schedule is created for you by your advisor/team during registration workshops. You’ll receive it in Banner Self Service in mid‑to‑late July. After the fall semester, you’ll create your own spring schedule with advisor guidance.
When will we be assigned an advisor?
You’ll be able to view your academic advisor's name and contact information after you receive your class schedule. You’ll officially be introduced and meet your advisor during the first week of classes.
Do we meet with our advisor before the schedule is out?
At Siena, you do not meet with your advisor before your schedule is released. Your advisor is assigned and viewable after your fall schedule appears (typically mid–late July), and you’ll have your first meeting during the first week of classes. You’ll start by filling out an interest form, which gives our advising team important information about your academic interests, potential majors, and course preferences. This form helps us build a fall class schedule that fits your goals.
Can I switch majors or double major before starting?
Yes you can. Before you start classes, just submit a Change of Major request through your Siena student portal (Banner Self Service). Once approved (especially for majors that require departmental permission), your incoming fall schedule will be adjusted accordingly.

What's the best computer to get?
MacBooks are a popular choice for many college students because they are reliable, easy to use, and have a long battery life. But depending on your major, you might want to look at other options. For example, if you are planning to study engineering or computer science, a Windows laptop could be a better fit since some programs work best on that system. The right laptop for you depends on what you will be using it for, so think about your classes, your budget, and what will help you stay organized and productive.
Is Siena compatible with MacBooks?
Yes, Siena College is fully compatible with MacBooks. You can connect to the campus Wi‑Fi, access labs, resources, and software without issue. Mac and Windows are used about evenly by students and faculty, and most required software runs on both.
Should I get an iPad or a laptop?
Prioritize a laptop, as it’s essential if your major requires specialized software (like engineering, coding, or data analysis), handling multitasking, file management, and full compatibility with school systems. An iPad can complement it well for note-taking, reading, and annotating, especially in classes with PDFs or handwritten diagrams. If you can only choose one, choose the laptop; if you can combine both, that’s the best setup for versatility.
What’s best for note-taking: iPad, laptop, or notebooks?
Handwriting notes on paper generally helps you remember and understand more, since you have to process and summarize info as you write. Typing on a laptop is fast and makes organization and search easy, but often leads to just copying lectures without really learning them. An iPad offers a solid hybrid—letting you handwrite for engagement while keeping notes digital for easy editing and backup.
What are dorm room essentials?
Start with the must-haves: extra-long twin sheets, pillows, a comforter or blankets, towels, a shower caddy with toiletries, and a desk lamp. Don’t forget your laptop, charger, laundry supplies, and any personal items like prescriptions or your student ID. Check out the residence hall packing checklist.
What should I not bring?
Please do not bring the following items:
Air conditioner, Appliances with exposed heating elements, Halogen lamps/bulbs, Candles, Fireworks, Flammable liquids, Grills, Incense, Extension cords, Animals/pets, Multiple electrical connectors, Oversized tapestries and other wall coverings, Lofted beds/mattresses, LED String lights.
Do we need a mattress?
No! All dorm rooms come furnished with a twin XL mattress. A mattress topper is optional but recommended for add-on comfort.
Do we need a fridge?
Not required but it’s a popular choice! You can bring one (max 4.0 cu. ft.) or rent a microfridge unit—fridge, freezer, and microwave in one! One unit per room, delivered and removed for you.

How do meal plans work?
There are a variety of meal plans available. Residential students are required to have a meal plan and commuter students are strongly encouraged to purchase a meal plan. As a new student, you will select your meal plan as part of your “New Student Housing Application.” Students can change their meal plan within the first 14 days of each semester as well as between semesters. Siena has a variety of dining options where meal swipes can be used by swiping their Saint Card.
Learn more: List of meal plans
What’s the difference between swipes, bonus dollars, and cash? (This is for th AY 24-25)
Meal swipes do not have a monetary value. Your Saint Card is loaded with a set amount of meal swipes per semester based on the plan you choose. You can use these at most dining locations for select items.
1 Bonus dollar is equal to $1 US Dollar. Bonus dollars come with each meal plan. They roll over from the fall to spring semester. You can use these at all dining locations to purchase anything.
Cash and credit cards can be used at all dining locations.
What options are there for people with food allergies or sensitivities?
Gluten-free and vegetarian options are available, but kosher options are not (unless the prepackaged food notes otherwise.) Students can meet with the dietitian and the Chef Manager of their preferred dining hall to learn how to safely navigate dining options and discuss appropriate meals. Be sure to report any food allergies to chogan@siena.edu and any gluten sensitivities to kjob@AVIFoodsystems.com before arriving on campus.
Can you add money to a commuter meal plan?
Yes! You can add money to any meal plan at the Saint Card Office or through this link.
What placement tests are required?
Placement tests vary depending on your major and individual academic needs. Find out more here.
Can I retake my placement test?
You only get one opportunity to take your placement exam, so be sure to review and prepare ahead of time. If you have special circumstances, you can reach out to the department directly to discuss your options.
Do undecided majors need placement tests?
No, Exploring (Undecided) majors do not need to take placement tests.
What’s a typical day like?
A typical day at Siena blends academics, social activities, and personal time. Students often begin their mornings with classes, followed by breaks for meals and relaxation. Afternoons may include additional classes, study sessions, or work-study jobs. Evenings are filled with extracurricular activities such as club meetings, athletic practices, or social events organized by the Student Events Board. Weekends offer opportunities for off-campus trips, community service, or participation in Saints Day or larger events like SienaFest. Throughout the week, students can engage in various activities, from attending lectures and performances to decorating their dorms for holidays. The campus atmosphere is vibrant, with events like food trucks and giveaways. This dynamic environment fosters a balance between academic responsibilities and personal growth.
How many books do you need?
Typically, each course may require one to four textbooks, depending on the subject and professor. For instance, STEM and language courses often have a single textbook, while humanities classes might require multiple smaller books. Some professors provide free access to textbooks, and many students find used or digital versions to be more affordable alternatives. It's advisable to wait until the first class meeting to confirm required materials, as some professors may not use the listed textbooks or may provide alternative resources. You can find what books you need on the course syllabus or on banner self service.
What resources are available for tutoring or writing?
The Academic Success Center and the Writing Center are great resources for students.
Tutoring services are available to all currently registered undergraduate students at Siena at no additional charge. There are two tutoring options available: Drop-in and one-on-one peer tutoring. Learn more: Academic Success Center
