Is your research exempt?
If so, does it require a limited review?
What’s the difference between exempt and exempt limited review?

Use this decision tree to help determine if your research falls into one of the 8 categories for “Exempt” research and if you need to request a “Limited Review” for your exempt project.

In general, exempt projects are no risk, use anonymous data, and fall into one of 8 federally defined categories. Exempt projects do not require a consent form and are reviewed in 1-2 weeks. Exempt limited review studies also fall into these categories but involves collection of sensitive, identifiable information. Exempt limited review studies require a consent form and take 2-3 weeks to review.

Both exempt and exempt limited review studies do not need continuing renewal from the IRB after the initial certification is granted.
