The 2026 STOP Conference will be hosted at Siena on Friday, January 16. The theme is The Legacy of Voting Rights in honor of the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The Voting Rights Act is one of the most significant changes on a federal level to protect voting rights by prohibiting racial discrimination in voting. The implementation of the act saw higher voting registration and turnout rates for historically marginalized communities, especially the Black community, which was most targeted by discriminatory laws and practices. Protests by MLK and other civil rights leaders brought national attention to voting rights through their brave activism and protests in the years leading up to the passing of the act. In honor of MLK Day and this year's STOP Conference, we explore the history of voting rights, the legacy of MLK and the civil rights movement, and the current conversation on voting rights. Students will explore how history impacts today and how they can become civically engaged young people.
