Internships, Alumni, Marketing, School of Business

Victoria Morrissey '21 can't help herself.

"Their products are amazing!"

She scored an internship with Pretty Rugged this spring, and she's been tasked with spreading brand awareness and developing new leads for the four-year-old company.

"I feel like Pretty Rugged is perfect for people who want to experience the outdoors but feel comfortable and fashionable."

Pretty Rugged specializes in fashionable faux fur blankets. Morrissey is contacting monogram companies from coast-to-coast, drumming up business ahead of the holiday season. And whether she's talking to a company - or giving an interview for an article in the SCoop - the marketing intern is always marketing.

"I also love that they are so willing to give back to the community and help where and who they can!"

In 1895, Joshua Slocum set sail, by himself, from Boston. Three years and 46,000 miles later, he steered his boat, Spray, into a Newport, Rhode Island port. It was the world's first solo circumnavigation of the earth. Fast forward 100 years and change.

Pretty Rugged founder Tracy Slocum is the great-great granddaughter of Joseph Slocum. Like her famous great-great grandfather, Tracy loves the water (though preferring Lake George over the open ocean). It was on the lake that she conceived of the Pretty Rugged blanket (sturdy and functional, yet aesthetic). The company was born.

The seven-woman team works out of their headquarters in Latham, and there's a direct connection to Siena. Slocum's dad is a proud Siena alumnus.

"I am so proud of how they've managed the business during the COVID-19 crisis. I found the internship on CareerSaint a few months ago, not realizing that I had actually seen the brand before and loved the idea. I am so happy to be interning with Pretty Rugged and hope to continue working with them while they grow their brand."
