Sweden's minister for foreign affairs was brutally murdered at a shopping mall in Stockholm. Jacee Leight '25 is on the hunt for the killer.

Hours before Anna Lindh was scheduled to participate in a televised debate, the Swedish politician was stabbed several times while shopping for clothes in a luxury department store. She died from her injuries the following day. Police, above, processed the crime scene, and Jacee was there, working with investigators, as the manhunt began. The experience was intense, but the stakes weren't as high as they seem. Mijailo Mijailović was apprehended, and later confessed to the crime, more than 20 years ago.

"I actually got to go to the murder scene. It was my first Wednesday here. Actual officers set up police tape. They made it all feel so real."

A psychology major with minors in criminal justice and forensics, Jacee is interested in criminal profiling. She finds it helpful to learn from actual case studies, but typically they're outlined in a textbook. The DIS study abroad program in Stockholm takes the concept one step further and allow students to work with law enforcement to solve one of the most infamous murders in the city's history, by staging the crime scene at the same department store where the murder happened in 2003.

"My major here is forensics psychology. We have these study tours every week. Each Wednesday they set up tours for us, and we meet with professionals and learn from their experiences. The program is very hands on. They show you everything step-by-step."

The program also features an international tour week. Jacee traveled to Scotland, and along with her classmates, they studied the prison system and spoke with law enforcement.

Jacee also has the flexibility within her schedule to travel on her own. She's already visited Athens and Amsterdam, and in a couple of weeks, she'll be connecting for the first time with distant relatives in Ireland.

"I had never really thought about study abroad, and then my roommate spent the fall in Ireland and raved about the experience. I looked into it, and discovered that Sweden offered the perfect program, so I went for it. This experience has given me the time and opportunity to see the world..."

...and catch a killer.
