This summer, twenty-one Siena students spent six weeks volunteering abroad through the Albany Medical College Program. Students participating in the Summer of Service shared their Franciscan education and values in the eight countries; Chile, Haiti, Honduras, Namibia, Peru, South Africa and Thailand.

After her experience studying abroad in Ecuador, Maggie McDonough ‘16 wanted to continue to make use of the Spanish language skills she acquired. McDonough traveled to El Porvenir where she helped create curriculum for English education classes aimed at children ages four to twelve, and adults. She worked three times a week, making sure the lessons were engaging and fun for the children.

“We gave the kids different coloring worksheets with English vocabulary on them and also with blank spaces to create their own designs. A little girl proudly displayed that she wanted to be a doctor when she grew up and it absolutely melted my heart. I was so proud of her for dreaming big and hope that even in the smallest way, me talking to her as a female student studying to become a doctor, could have inspired her as much as she inspired me.”

McDonough found that it is important to be involved with sustainable volunteer programs, such as the Honduras Child Alliance, where the community is taught how to eventually take over the curriculum.

Similarly, Victoria Mattick ‘16 traveled to Katutura, Namibia, where she taught mathematics to students at the Bernhard Nordkamp Centre (BNC), which is led by Siena alumna Marybeth Gallagher ‘86. The BNC aims to provide a safe environment for the children to play and learn.

“Despite living in total poverty, cramped in huts with twenty other family members, children still came to class every day with a smile and a funny story to tell. I hope that I taught them a fraction of what they taught me,” said Mattick.

Meena Zakher ‘16, was inspired by the life of Saint Francis to serve both abroad and in his community. Zakher’s Summer of Service marked his second service trip to South Africa. He spent his time during this experience volunteering at Nkosi’s Haven in Johannesburg. The volunteer site offers holistic care and support for mothers and children suffering from HIV and AIDS. Zakher volunteered at the AIDS orphanage where he spent his time tutoring, playing games, and creating activities.

During his stay he also served at the Mother Teresa Home where he spent time visiting and supporting the ill. On the weekends Zakher planned bible study activities and tutored children from local parishes.

“My time at Siena has confirmed my love to serve and has provided me with many opportunities to serve in the community and abroad.”

The three Saints have returned home, but continue their volunteer work at Siena as they prepare for their careers in the medical community.
