Mission 

The mission of the History Department is to introduce students to the complexity and diversity of the human past, to foster intellectual curiosity and careful scholarship, to provide purposeful, mission-driven learning experiences, and to equip graduates with the skills valued by employers and graduate programs in the present.

  1. Historical Skills
    • Develop competence in historical methods including critical thinking and research skills.
    • Develop competence in evidence based historical writing and oral communication.
  2. Historical Knowledge
    • Acquire knowledge of historical events and their significance for the development of world history.
    • Understand diverse cultures and viewpoints in world history.
    • Explain how and why historical change happens.
  3. Historical Thinking
    • Develop competence in the analysis of historical evidence for interpreting and understanding the past.
    • Recognize the value of conflicting historical narratives that provide diverse perspectives on the past.
