Welcome back to The Legacy Family Spotlight, a monthly media feature highlighting the proud tradition of attending Siena where green and gold runs through the generations. Our next family, the Larow family, spans almost every decade with roots that start in the 50s. The LaRows have woven their tale of connection, support, and shared experiences within the Siena community.

The LaRow family members include Dr. Ed LaRow '59, Nancy LaRow '80, MaryAnne LaRow Egan '86, Tim Egan '85, Ed LaRow Jr '88, Joanne (Rizzo) LaRow '89, John LaRow '92, Cathy (LaRow) Dawson '97, TJ Egan '10, Ryan Egan '14, and Kathryn Egan '18. The story begins in the 1950’s with Ed taking the first steps on campus as a freshman. Ed, a Class of 1959 Reunion Class Ambassador, will be once again stepping foot on campus for Alumni Weekend 2024 celebrating his 65th class reunion.

As you can imagine there are endless stories to share about the time that each LaRow family member spent at Siena. Cathy’s favorite is when a boa constrictor got loose in Roger Bacon and was eventually found (dead) in a heating duct next to the benches in the hallway. Some LaRows found love at Siena, like MaryAnne '86 and Tim Egan '85 who met in the hallowed classrooms of Siena, as did Ed Jr. '88 and Joanne (Rizzo) LaRow '89.

As many say, the Siena community is one of the strongest you’ll ever be a part of. The friars are at the focal point and Fr. Martin Hanhauser guided Ed, Sr. immensely during his time at Siena, and for Tim, it was Fr. Richard Mucowski, whose understanding of dyslexia empowered him to excel. Professor Jim Matthews influenced MaryAnne to push herself in computer science and shape her career.

Today, the LaRow family continues to make waves in their respective fields. Ed Sr., having retired from his position as the director of the AMC program at Siena College, cherishes the memories of his alma mater. MaryAnne, now a dedicated teacher at Siena, imparts her wisdom to the next generation. Ed Jr. and Joanne have carved successful paths as physicians, while John LaRow '92 serves as Senior VP at Gilbane, who is leading the Nobel Hall project at Siena. The Nobel Hall science center expansion and Roger Bacon renovation will directly impact 41% of the Siena College student body (and growing!) The science complex will feature approximately 40,000 sq. ft. of all-new specialized laboratories, active learning spaces, and more. This transformative project is Siena's launchpad toward its goal of becoming the #1 college in the region for the sciences. Cathy's healing touch as a doctor for inpatient medicine graces the patients at Saratoga Hospital, while Tim thrives as a Real Estate Appraiser. TJ thrives in the tech world as a web developer at IBM, while Ryan delves into data analytics at Monogram. As for Kathryn, she's embraced a life of adventure, trading her programmer's desk for the open road as a motorcycle vagabond.

Lastly, both Ed, Sr. and MaryAnne are recipients of the esteemed Siena Walton Teacher Award, Nancy has a room in Rosetti Hall named after her, and Ed, Sr. has a townhouse named after him, along with a wing in Roger Bacon. MaryAnne and Tim have the Grab ’n Go, which is located in Snyder Hall.

The LaRow family's story is not just one of academic achievement or professional success but a testament to the enduring bonds formed within the Siena community. To summarize it best, the LaRows believe Siena holds a special place because of its unwavering support system. We all appreciate the people who make up the Siena community. Everyone supports one another, which is a quality that is hard to find.”
