JOIN OUR PEER TUTORING STAFF

Are you the person your friends and family go to for feedback on their writing or presentation assignments? Do you enjoy learning? Have you been told you are a great listener? Are you thinking about becoming an educator? Do you feel a sense of joy and excitement helping others communicate their unique ideas and experiences?

If you answered YES! To just ONE of these questions, you may enjoy being a Writing Center Tutor!

Our peer tutors are undergraduate and graduate Siena students, and our professional tutors have nearly 70 years of combined experience as educators in secondary and higher education. We are all unique–majors, interests, backgrounds, hobbies, experiences, and tutoring approaches–and we are united in our desire to support others in their communication practices and goals. We love being a part of the Writing Center because we get to listen and learn from our community all day as well as meet the diverse needs of every individual.

Peer tutors are paid minimum wage ($15.50/hour as of January 1, 2025) and work study funding is not required. All peer tutors should be able to work at least 4 hours per week on a consistent schedule.

TWO EASY STEPS TO BECOMING A WRITING CENTER TUTOR

1. Obtain permission to take WRIT 240 - Peer Tutoring in Writing (Spring semesters)
IMPORTANT NOTE: WRIT 240 is capped at 18, so planning ahead is imperative! Registration for Spring courses begins in October, so reach out early in the Fall semester!

  • Before registration opens for Spring semester (in the fall), complete the WRIT 240 Application form to request permission of instructor to enroll in the course.
  • If you are invited to enroll in WRIT 240, you will receive a confirmation email inviting you to register for the course for Spring 2026.
  • Email the Writing Center with any questions!

2. Apply for a Writing Center Peer Tutor Position on Handshake between January and March for the next academic year.

If you have already taken WRIT 240 and passed with a B+ or better, or are currently enrolled in WRIT 240 and have a B+ or better, please complete the appropriate application in Handshake depending on your student status (undergraduate or graduate). Applications open January 1 and must be submitted by MARCH 1 for consideration for the upcoming academic year. Finalists will be contacted by MARCH 15 to schedule an interview with the Co-Directors and a panel of current Writing Center tutors.
