Dear Siena Community,

In recent weeks, a series of executive orders and federal directives have raised questions across higher education, particularly regarding research funding, student aid, and immigration policy. I want to acknowledge the concerns some in our community may have and assure you that Siena’s leadership is actively monitoring these developments.

As a Catholic and Franciscan institution, we remain steadfast in our commitment to the dignity of all people, a value that has been at the heart of Siena’s mission since its founding. The Franciscan Friars of the Province of Our Lady of Guadalupe recently reaffirmed this principle, calling for policies that uphold justice, mercy, and respect for the most vulnerable among us. Their statement, shared in the January 29 Daily Digest, reflects the very essence of who we are as a Siena community—one that welcomes, supports, and uplifts all individuals in pursuit of knowledge, opportunity, and a shared sense of belonging.

While it is too soon to fully understand the implications of these orders and directives or how they may take effect, I want to provide some clarity on what we know today. First, there have been no changes to federal student aid or student loan programs. Students should feel assured that their access to financial assistance remains unchanged. Second, our grants team is carefully assessing any potential shifts in federal research funding. We are in communication with the appropriate agencies and will keep community members who have been awarded grants updated to the extent possible on the status of their funding. Ensuring continuity for research projects and College initiatives remains a priority.

Siena will navigate these issues with thoughtfulness and resolve, guided by our mission and our commitment to each member of our community. We are not in the business of reacting to every new headline with a statement, but I want you to know that we are paying attention, and we are engaged. Our focus, as always, is on ensuring that Siena remains a place where all students can learn, grow, and prepare to make a meaningful impact on the world.

As we move forward, I encourage each of us to live out the values that define Siena—respect, compassion, and a commitment to the dignity of all. In our classrooms, workplaces, and everyday interactions, we have the opportunity to foster understanding, extend kindness, and strengthen the sense of belonging that makes this community so special.

Thank you for all you do to uphold the values that make Siena such a special place. Let us move forward together, with faith in our mission and confidence in our future.

Peace and all good,
Chuck
