Dear Siena Community,
I’m proud to announce a transformational gift from Rosario “Sal” Ilacqua ’50 that will advance business education, expand access to opportunity, and honor a life defined by humility, faith, and belief in the power of education.
Sal, who was born in Albany to Italian immigrants and proudly served in the United State Navy during World War II, pursued his degree in finance at Siena on the GI Bill. After college, Sal moved to New York City and launched a career as a globally renowned oil analyst. He credited Siena for its foundational role in his success, and as the son of an uneducated bricklayer, he staunchly believed there should be no barriers to the pursuit of knowledge. Sal passed away in 2012, and in his trust, he ensured that both Siena and the transformative power of an education would be pillars of his legacy.
Siena will use Sal’s extraordinary act of philanthropy to support students in several enduring ways. The School of Business Lecture Series will now be named in his honor, ensuring its long-term sustainability and expanded impact. The Sal Ilacqua ’50 Business Lecture Series brings accomplished alumni and industry leaders to campus each semester to share real-world insights, career guidance, and personal stories — strengthening professional networks and offering students direct access to the insight and relationships that shape careers.
The gift will also fund scholarships for students with demonstrated financial need, with preference for first-generation students. Additionally, Student Opportunity Funds within the School of Business will support students in advancing their academic study towards professional certification. These funds will reduce financial barriers associated with exam preparation materials and credentials such as the CFA.
It’s not a coincidence Sal bought a house around the corner from campus. His heart remained close to Siena throughout his life. Through this impactful gift, we will ensure that Sal’s life and values live on, empowering students, strengthening the School of Business, and advancing Siena University’s mission for generations to come.
Peace and all good,
Chuck
