Theatre major Grey Hertz ’28 started writing songs senior year in high school. Freshman year at Siena, they shared their music with some friends, who liked the sound and wanted to hear more. So, Hertz got down to work.
This September the self-taught singer/songwriter/guitarist released the single “so many thoughts” followed by the full album “too much to ask” on all major streaming platforms.
“so many thoughts” is an upbeat indie-pop track about living with anxiety and a mind that never slows down. Described as “honestly-written and energetic,” it offers a relatable take on overthinking without losing its sense of fun.
“I enjoy writing music. I find myself having a lot of feelings and this is a really good way to express myself,” they said, describing the musical style as “vulnerable.”
The album features seven tracks in different musical styles. Their friend Jayden Wojcik ’27 had recording equipment, and the two connected to get songs finalized and set down for others to enjoy:

Hertz taught themself to play guitar in middle school, and their time in the school choir helped hone their voice. Rather than sketching out notes on sheet music, Hertz uses the software BandLab to compose. They performed a couple covers and her original song “who knows/chosen” at Siena’s Music Mayhem in 2025, and success there led to a gig as an opener for SienaFest.
Working with the music distributor Too Lost, they did a “waterfall” release last month. Musician Hertz and producer Wojcik are learning the business as they go, trying out new software and equipment, getting tutorials from YouTube videos and advice from other musicians, and getting up to speed on distribution tactics and copyrights.
“There’s tons of information out there,” said Wojcik. “We’re figuring out what works and what doesn’t.”
Any live performance plans in the near future? Hertz is looking into opportunities.
“I love to perform,” they said. “Right now, though, I’m focusing on promoting the album, and I would love to write another one.”
