- An avid outdoorsman, I spend my free time in the Adirondack mountains of upstate New York, hiking, camping, paddling, fishing, bird-watching, taking photos, and exploration. I've climbed over half of NY's 46 high peaks, and enjoy off-trail hiking with a map and compass.
- I make Detroit style pizza at home using local pizza shop dough and a special pan made in Michigan. My wife is an authentic Michigander and also a member of the Siena faculty. We met on campus and got married in kayaks on open water. True story.
- When I began college in my early 20s, I was extremely shy and refused to speak in class or even read materials out loud. Two years later, I auditioned for the college play and got the lead role. My performance earned me an academic award.
- I play a little mandolin. My instrument currently has 6 strings out of 8 and I've been playing it like that for so long that I've grown fond of the more sparse sound.
- I love all kinds of music. I've driven to Ohio from New York twice to see Tom Waits in concert. Last summer I saw Colin Stetson perform on a mountain top in the Catskills; it was sublime. I've seen Lightning Bolt perform twice locally and have likely sustained considerable hearing damage as a result. Listening to a live orchestra play Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique at SPAC was transformative.
- While camping in NY's high peaks, I was once started by a large black bear who walked up to our campsite in the dark. I valiantly defended our campsite and helped save many lives. There are multiple versions of this story, but you should believe mine because I am the most reliable narrator.
- The funeral director at my father's wake was so impressed by the obituary I had written that he offered me a job on the spot.
- I love movies and films. Some of my favorites include: Rashomon, Star Wars, Once Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Spirited Away, Alien, Memento, Amadeus, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Mandy, and Amélie.
- As a child, whenever anyone would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I said "an old man sitting in a rocking chair." So far so good with this highly ambitious life goal.
- I love being a librarian at Siena College and want to encourage all of our amazing students to use the Standish Library and its resources. Be judicious with all of the information out there. Don't settle for inferior sources, trust the pros!
