Admissions

When people imagine college classes, they often think of lecture halls, notebooks, and exams. And yes, those exist. But at Siena, learning shows up in ways that feel far more immersive. A Siena education goes beyond what you receive. It is something you actively do.

Sometimes that means swapping a desk for a kitchen. Other times it means stepping in front of a camera, standing on the sidelines of a live sports broadcast, or heading outside to observe wildlife in its natural habitat. It might even mean studying the night sky or traveling internationally as part of a class.

Still picturing a traditional classroom? Our students say it best. Check out this short video to see the hands-on classes that make learning at Siena anything but ordinary.

classes that turn learning into an experience

One class that perfectly captures this approach is Wines of the World. Rather than memorizing facts, students explore global cultures through taste, discussion, and discovery. The course blends geography, history, and tradition, turning each class into a journey across some of the world’s most iconic wine regions.

In Chemistry in the Kitchen, science becomes something you can see, smell, and taste. The kitchen doubles as a lab as students experiment with everyday ingredients, uncovering the chemistry behind cooking and seeing how scientific concepts show up in real life.

Creativity takes center stage in Acting for the Camera, where students step in front of the lens and learn the craft of on-screen performance from Professor Kelley Curran, a professional television actor known for her role on HBO’s The Gilded Age. Through hands-on filming, scene work, and real-time feedback, students gain practical experience while learning directly from someone who actively works in the industry.

For students drawn to innovation and entrepreneurship, New Product Development feels more like a startup studio than a traditional classroom. As part of the course, students develop ideas and pitch them in Spark Tank, Siena’s version of the hit show Shark Tank, where creativity, strategy, and real-world thinking take center stage.

Learning at Siena regularly extends beyond the classroom walls. In Sports Field Production I, students work behind the scenes of live athletic events, gaining hands-on experience with cameras, production roles, and real broadcasts. Ornithology takes biology students outdoors, where learning happens through fieldwork, observation, and direct interaction with the natural world. And in Observational Astronomy, students look up, quite literally, applying what they learn while studying planets and stars under the night sky.

Some courses even take learning across borders. Through the International Travel Course, students earn academic credit while experiencing new cultures firsthand, connecting coursework to the world beyond campus. For nursing students, Holistic Pharmacology brings a human-centered approach to healthcare, encouraging students to consider the full picture of patient care in real-world settings.

These classes are just a snapshot of what learning looks like at Siena.

Here, education is active, immersive, and designed to stay with you long after the semester ends. You won’t just sit back and absorb information. You’ll cook, create, film, travel, observe, and explore. Because at Siena, education lives through action.
