Breaking news: Siena received provisional approval this week from the Council on Social Work Education for its new Master of Social Work degree and has already begun marketing the program to potential students.
Close to 10 students, primarily recent bachelor’s degree graduates from Siena, are expected to enroll for the fall 2025 semester. Courses will be offered in person; the degree will take one to two years to complete full time, or two to four years part time.
“The new master’s program is deeply rooted in the Franciscan mission, emphasizing service, social justice, and compassion,” said Elisa Martin, Ph.D., associate professor and program director of social work. “Our graduates can make lasting impact by helping others and creating positive change in the world.”
Martin said the MSW will prepare graduates for career opportunities in clinical work, policy development, program administration, school social work, and criminal justice, to name just a few options.
“The program offers specialized training in micro, mezzo, and macro practices, equipping future social workers with the skills needed to support individuals, communities, and organizations,” she said.
Siena will be able to offer up to 10 full-tuition scholarships from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation for students from New York state. Funding for another scholarship opportunity is being pursued.
