Starting college is a big step for anyone, but for international students, it’s an even bigger leap. They leave behind their families, friends, and home countries to chase their dreams in a new place. At Siena, international students bring fresh perspectives, different cultures, and inspiring stories that make our campus even more special.
A Journey Across the World
Every international student at Siena has a unique story. Sarah, from Poland, says her experience is both exciting and emotional. Anuk, a senior from Sri Lanka, feels lucky to study in the U.S. but also finds it challenging. Arthur, from Brazil, and Cena, from Germany, talk about the independence they’ve gained—moving to another country means learning to take care of yourself in every way.
Culture Shock & Everyday Differences
Adjusting to life in the U.S. comes with surprises. Simple things like mealtime feel different—dinner here is usually at 5 or 6 p.m., while in countries like South Africa and the Netherlands, it’s normal to eat around 8 or 9 p.m. Some students also have to get used to driving on the opposite side of the road!
Even though studying abroad is an amazing opportunity, homesickness is real. Many miss their families, friends, and home-cooked meals. Katherine, from South Africa, grew up in a country with 11 official languages and tons of cultural diversity. She didn’t realize how much she would miss that daily mix of different people and traditions.
Ryan, from Morocco, remembers drinking tea with his family on their rooftop while watching the sunset—something that feels worlds away now. And beyond the food and traditions, one of the hardest parts is missing important moments with loved ones back home. “Life continues without you in it,” one student shared.
Home away from Home
What makes Siena feel like home—even from 3,000 miles away—is the sense of community that surrounds every student. From friendly professors who take time to know your name, to classmates who become like family, Siena offers more than just academics—it offers connection. Many international students say it’s the little things that made the biggest impact: being invited to a holiday dinner, receiving support during a tough week, or simply sharing laughs in the dorms. Over time, these moments built a second home where they least expected it.
A Life-Changing Experience
Studying abroad is more than just getting a degree—it’s an adventure. It’s about personal growth, making lifelong connections, and gaining a global perspective. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it. International students remind us that while home might be far away, you can find belonging anywhere. Hear more from the students here.
