Career and Internship Center, School of Science

Kira Dove ’23 got a job offer last October, which she accepted almost immediately. This September, she’ll begin her career as an actuarial analyst for Deloitte, a multinational professional services firm with a presence in Albany. Scoring the job in the fall meant, “It was a huge weight off my shoulders. I got to enjoy rest of my senior year with my friends and not think about the job search.” Plus, a September start date left her summer wide open, which created an opening for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Kira spent a semester studying in Athens, Greece, and made two friends from other American colleges. All three graduated in May, and all three had a window before starting their careers. A month ago, they booked a one-way ticket to Southeast Asia.

Kira and her two friends flew into Bangkok, then explored southern Thailand. They’re improvising the month-long trip as they go, but Bali is next, and then likely Vietnam and Cambodia.

“We went to an elephant sanctuary. It’s the most magical thing I’ve ever done. They have been rescued from the tourism industry, rehabilitated and are no longer fearful of people. We got to feed them watermelon.”

Kira recognizes that her Asian adventure wouldn’t be possible if didn’t have a great job lined up for the fall. Also, she admits, there would be no job, if not for the MacDonnell Career and Internship Center.

Representatives from Deloitte reached out to the MacDonnell Career and Internship Center in search of actuaries. The opportunity was then relayed to Kira, and she quickly applied. She landed an interview and then realized; she wasn’t ready for an interview.

“I contacted the career center and they were so amazing. They got me in for a mock interview super last minute. They also provided me with interview tips that were really helpful. They helped me out so much!”

Kira aced the interview, accepted the job, and months later, was making travel arrangements to Asia. She’s excited for the adventure that still awaits in Vietnam, but she’s also looking ahead to the adventure that awaits back in Albany.

“Dr. John O’Neil and the actuarial science program prepared me so well. I’m really excited to just apply everything I’ve been learning the past four years into my career!”
