Since its founding in 1937, women have always been part of campus life at Siena College as part-time day and evening students. But it was 50 years ago this fall that women at last took their place at Siena as full-time residential students.

To celebrate the transformational contributions women have made to Siena, the College planned on hosting a series of special events in March, which is also national Women’s History Month. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus, the College has cancelled or postponed the month's events.

“As a scholar of the psychology of gender and leadership, I'm thrilled that we are showcasing women leaders and gender leadership issues this spring,” said Margaret E. Madden, Ph.D., Siena’s interim president.  “Last year Br. Ed Coughlin proposed commemorating the 50th anniversary so it is very gratifying to see his vision realized.  Siena has a proud history of producing women leaders of all kinds of organizations and we are pleased to recognize their accomplishments.”

"Each day at Siena I have the distinct privilege to lead the Sr. Thea Bowman Center for Women.  This month, in particular, I am delighted that we are shining on light on the unique contributions women have made to our community and the world,” said Beth DeAngelis, senior director of the center. “Sr. Thea Bowman delivered a passionate call to community-building and love for all our brothers and sisters."
