As a business major, Blake Demianenko ’27 understands that the economy is crucially interwoven with efforts to address the climate crisis.

He and fellow School of Business students have been involved in organizing Siena’s second annual integral ecology symposium. Reimagining Economy: For People and Planet will be held in the MAC on Thursday, Feb. 5.

“If you care about where the economy is headed and are interested in the idea of how we can build a mutually beneficial future for both humanity and the planet, then don't miss the symposium,” said Demianenko. “It’s going to be a great opportunity for us to gain a new perspective on life and connect with professionals and fellow students who are working towards creating a cleaner, more sustainable future.”

He recorded an episode about the symposium for “The Saints and Alumni Show” on WVCR radio 88.3FM. You can access it here after 5PM today or via the show’s podcast.

Siena community members are encouraged to attend part or all of the day-long symposium, which will feature panel discussions with Siena faculty and students, as well as guest speakers. The keynote address will be delivered by Amy Domini, founder of Domini Impact Investments, which is widely regarded as the leading voice for socially responsible investing.

Another student who is looking forward to the event is marketing major Olivia Botelho ’27. She conducted the research project “Digital Financial Fraud and Scams Targeting Senior Citizens,” where she learned how deeply economics, ethics, and corporate social responsibility intersect.

“Working with Dr. [Soyoung] Joo and Dr. [Marie] Rice has been incredibly meaningful, and Dr. Joo has become a true mentor to me throughout the research process,” she said. “The Laudato Sí symposium aims to encourage students across all majors to think beyond profit and take opportunities to contribute to a more ethical and socially responsible world.”

The symposium is being co-hosted by the Laudato Si’ Center for Integral Ecology, the School of Business, and the Spirit of 68′ Committee.
