International travel courses are classes held on campus and include an embedded travel component, led by Siena faculty, typically at the end of the fall or spring semester. Traveling as a class for 1-2 weeks, students engage more fully with course material and form a deeper connection with cultures, communities, and academic themes around the world.

Costa Rica Health studies:

HLTH320 (1 credit) This course will meet for one hour per week in the fourth quarter of the academic year (second half of the spring semester) to prepare students to travel. We will have in-person and online meetings until we travel. Students will be provided with a syllabus, required readings, and homework assignments that will allow them to optimize their pre-departure understanding of Costa Rica’s healthcare system.

The nation of Costa Rica is a marvel for many reasons. Its progressive policies on the environment, education, and health care make it an exemplary system to study. This course will provide students with the historical, cultural, and environmental tools necessary to visit key sites in Costa Rica, talk to knowledgeable practitioners, and visit with people whose lives are impacted by the healthcare system there. This course is appropriate for students interested in clinical health, public health, global health, and health economics.

Imperial powers of Europe: Germany and Austria

3 credits POSC. Many of us have heard of, or dream of visiting, Spain, France, and Italy, but do you know that Germany (the Bavaria region) and Austria (Salzburg and Vienna) can easily outshine the three prime destinations Americans flock to? This new, first time launched travel course will allow you to discover numerous UNESCO Heritage sites in both countries, as we drive along the Alpine foothills to explore the castles of King Ludwig II (one of them, allegedly, served as a model and inspiration for Disney’s Cinderella castle), learn out about “modern" technologies invented for the kings, be awed while marveling at the jewels in the Treasuries of European monarchs (some going back to Charlemagne), observe in-action medieval clocks that are still in operation today, and tour magnificent buildings in Vienna. We will visit the German “Versailles” (Herrenchiemsee Palace) built on an island in Lake Chiemsee, the breathtaking Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles, opulent Linderhof and Hofburg palaces, have guided tours of imperial Munich and Vienna, and even enjoy a Viennese cooking class! Oh, and, of course, we will visit Salzburg, the birth city of Mozart, which most Americans (perhaps not you but certainly your grandparents and parents) know about from the Sound of Music movie.
