Hearing from someone you care about that they have experienced sexual violence can produce a range of emotions and you may want to help but are unsure of what to do or say. RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) has created an acronym called TALK to help.
Thank them for telling you
Speaking about a sexual assault is a difficult and brave think to do. Let your friend know you appreciate the trust they have shown in you to share this with them.
Ask how you can help
You may have an opinion as to what your friend should do, but avoid giving advice. It’s important for your friend to know that they are in control. Simply asking how you can help can show support.
Listen without judgement
Give your friend your undivided attention and focus on their feelings. Avoid asking them for details about what happened or pressuring them to follow a certain course of action. Reassure them it wasn’t their fault.
Keep supporting
Be understanding of your friend, check in on them, include them, and encourage them to seek campus resources through the Title IX Office for support.
