Office Hours
Born and raised in Cowen, West Virginia, the son of a coal miner turned boxing trainer, Dr. Todd D. Snyder’s research is deeply intertwined with his own life experience, the theme of working-class masculinity serving as his primary focus. Regardless of topic, be it Appalachian culture, hip-hop rhetoric, or professional boxing, Dr. Snyder’s research looks to highlight perspectives relegated to the margins of history. A truly eclectic scholar, Dr. Snyder’s work borrows from a variety of fields: rhetoric and composition, community literacy studies, hip-hop studies, and sports journalism.
Since joining the faculty at Siena College in 2011, Dr. Snyder has published four books: The Rhetoric of Appalachian Identity (McFarland, 2014), 12 Rounds in Lo’s Gym: Boxing and Manhood in Appalachia (West Virginia University Press, 2018), Bundini: Don’t Believe the Hype (Hamilcar, 2020), and Beat Boxing: How Hip-Hop Changed the Fight Game (Hamilcar, 2021). Dr. Snyder’s work has also been published by the University of Kentucky Press, Oxford University Press, and The Community Literacy Journal.
Dr. Snyder has presented this body of work at numerous national conferences, guest lectures, and public presentations. In addition to these activities, Dr. Snyder has made over fifty appearances on local, national, and international media outlets. His books have been excerpted in Sports Illustrated, Ring Magazine, Lit Hub, and The Wall Street Journal and have been featured on mainstream media outlets such as ESPN’s The Undefeated and reviewed in scholarly journals such as Appalachian Journal and The Journal of the Sports Literature Association. More recently, Dr. Snyder has worked as a screen writer and production consultant for film and television. He is the 2024 recipient of the Raymond C. Kennedy Excellence in Scholarship Award.
