John C. O'Neill

Dr. O'Neill completed his undergraduate education at SUNY Potsdam where he earned a BA in Drama and a BA/MA in Mathematics in 1992. He later earned his PhD in Mathematics at the University at Albany in 1998 with a dissertation centered in Combinatorial (Geometric) Group Theory. His first academic job was at the United States Air Force Academy, where he became the first civilian from Mathematical Sciences to win the Outstanding Academy Educator award. In 2001, he joined the faculty of Siena College as a member of the Quantitative Business Analysis Department as an Assistant Professor. At Siena College, he developed the course sequencing and some of the curriculum for the Actuarial Science Major which currently has over 60 majors. He is jointly appointed in the departments of Mathematics and Quantitative Business Analysis and, in 2013, was recognized as the recipient of the Jerome Walton Award, Siena College's highest honor for teaching professors.

The Quantitative Business Analysis Department changed it's name to Business Analytics and Actuarial Science in 2019.

 My teaching philosophy is to set high standards and do everything in my power to motivate students to meet those standards. And start off every class responding to their questions.

What I Love About Siena

 I love teaching at Siena because of the community. Our students are hard-working and engaged and my colleagues are fun to collaborate with.

My Favorite Courses to Teach

 I love any course that I teach because of the interested, motivated students that sign up for them. I parrticularly enjoy MATH 371 Probability for Statistics.

Current Research

I have published in Mathematics, Economics, Marketing and Accounting Education. I have also collaborated on three cases that are centered in the field of Operations Management.

Awards & Distinctions

•  In recognition of  teaching excellence, Siena College created  this award in  honor of Professor Jerome Walton, one of the College's first lay faculty,  who served Siena for 21 years as a Professor of Commerce, Economics, Statistics, and Business Mathematics. The award is given annually to the faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in teaching. Honorees of the Jerome Walton Award shall be recognized for their record of outstanding and passionate teaching, for their creativity and willingness to experiment, and for their ability to engage students with rigorous and intellectually challenging subject matter.
