Welcome back to The Legacy Family Spotlight, where we celebrate Siena families connected by generations of green and gold. For the Kavanaugh/Mostransky family, Siena has been more than a shared campus—it’s a place that ties generations together through meaningful experiences, shared values, and the chance to forge their own path while making new memories.
Meegan and Marc’s love story began at Marc’s 21st birthday party in a Plassman suite, and “The rest was history,” they say. Their Siena experience included work-study jobs at the MAC, cheering, and playing soccer, as well as many late-night memories at classic student hangouts like Dapps, Miracles, and the coveted Townhouse parties. They married in 1998 at St. Mary of the Angels Chapel at Siena. Shortly thereafter, their daughter September was born, and since, Meegan founded the Siena dance team, September had a front row seat to some of the great basketball rivalries and games Siena played. Slowly, game by game, the Siena spirit grew in September, and during the college search process, she soon realized the best choice was the one that had been around most of her life.
But Siena wasn’t just around for Meegan and Marc during their college years, Siena stayed with them throughout their lives. Their son Kashius was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 6, and the athletics department was there to lend support. “They have treated our family like family all these years,” say Meegan and Marc. Kashius is now a healthy 19-year-old studying to become a physical therapist at SUNY Cortland. They mention that they will always be grateful for the love and support that Siena Athletics showed them during the challenging years of Kashius' battle with leukemia.
Throughout their Siena journeys, each family member was shaped by mentors, role models, and experiences that left a lasting impression. Meegan credits Professors Bonni Baker, Tom McCaffrey, and Dr. Lonnstrom for pushing her to grow, while Marc reflects on how Carl Weis, Dr. Clements, and Mary Fitzgerald-Hoyt helped shape his approach to teaching. September’s academic path was guided by Dr. Snyder, Dr. Park, and Dr. Cutler—professors who provided encouragement, support, and the freedom to embrace change as she discovered her passions. September also met incredible friends along the way, and was a member of the Siena Cheer team all four years.
Today, the Kavanaugh/Mostransky family continues to shine with their Siena ties. Meegan teaches social studies at Schenectady High School, teaches at Vent Fitness, and remains devoted to the Siena Dance Team as the head coach. Marc has built a long career as an English teacher and has mentored many Siena student teachers. His love of music also has him DJing across the Capital Region. And September—Class of 2025, graduat cum laude—leaves Siena with a degree in communications, a pre-law certificate, and a deep connection to the community that helped raise her as she heads off to law school in Massachusetts this fall. For the Kavanaugh/Mostransky family, Siena has always been more than a college. It’s where generations have shared unforgettable experiences, building a common bond rooted in green and gold. And like all Siena legacies, it’s also where each family member found the opportunity to take that shared foundation and start their successful path forward.
