Colonel George Fasching ’60 retired from the US Army after 28 years of service, from the newly formed Aviation Branch, after proudly swearing-in his son, John, as a second Lieutenant in the US. Army. At 17, George was awarded a full scholarship to Siena College. Siena provided George with a spiritual and intellectual foundation that enabled the accomplishment of the achievements considered to be worthy of recognition for this great honor. Like St. Paul said, "Let me then boast of what God has enabled to be accomplished.” George states, “For without God's gracious presence, I would literally not be here today. At a time of great crisis in my life, the Friars at Siena taught me how to be a “man of God.” At a time when I needed love the most, God sent an angel named Mary Anne, a St. Rose girl into my life. Mary Anne shared in every joy and tragedy we have encountered for 64 years of marriage. Without her strength and willingness to share in the demands and sacrifices of military service, none of our successes would have been possible. She and our children earned every promotion and medal I have been awarded.” As a distinguished Military Graduate of the Mohawk BN, George was Commissioned in the Regular Army. An honor which resulted in the cancellation of the second week of his and Mary Anne’s honeymoon, requiring immediate relocation to FT Dix, N.J. where their military and life adventure began. George held command positions at every rank, while serving in Field Artillery, Armor, Transportation, Aviation, Special Forces, and General Staff. He received "specialized training" for various assignments including: Command and General Staff College, National Defense University, resulting in an MS in International Relations, and an MS in Public Administration from George Washington University. George was selected for promotion to Colonel (Below the Zone), “frocked” and was assigned to the Senior U.S. Command EUCOM. His mission, as a strategic planner was to facilitate the execution of the "war plan" by securing greater support from NATO Allies, to reduce the burden borne by the United States. George led the negotiating teams producing Bi Lateral Agreements with 17 NATO Nations. George’s military honors and recognitions include; Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry: Valorous Unit Citation; Distinguished Flying Cross, Two Bronze Stars; Air Medal for Valor; 14 Air Medals each representing 50 hours of Combat flight, and DOD Sustained Superior Performance Medal.
