Siena Students for Fair Trade

We are dedicated to institutionalizing and increasing awareness regarding fair trade; guaranteeing workers in developing nations a living wage and protection from harsh working conditions. We have aligned our mission with the Franciscan mission of Siena College, and strive to treat all people with the dignity and respect that each person deserves. Through awareness events, resident assistant programs and other activities, we hope to educate the Siena College community about the benefits of fair trade. Through these efforts, Siena Students for Fair Trade hopes to create a more socially just and peaceful world.

What we do

Siena Students for Fair Trade seeks to uphold the mission statement of Siena, pursuing “faith in a personal and provident God, reverence for all creation, affirmation of the unique worth of each person, delight in diversity, appreciation for beauty, service with the poor and marginalized, a community where members work together in friendship and respect and commitment to building a world that is more just, peaceable and humane.”

Our status

On Tuesday, November 9, 2010, the Siena College community gathered together in Serra Hall to celebrate the institution’s achievement of Fair Trade college status. Siena College is the third college in the United States and first Catholic college in the country to be awarded this status and recognition. Through the student-led initiative first begun by Mike Ellement ‘10 and Ben Thomas ‘12, Siena has shown itself to be an institution which is truly dedicated to the Franciscan mission.

Club activities

To accomplish the goals of the club, SSFT members engage in a number of campus activities and meetings that better inform members and the community of the ways we can take part in Fair Trade. Some of our events include:

  • Fair Trade Wine Tasting
  • Fair Trade World Cup
  • Chocolate Tastings
  • Fair Trade Caffeine Boost
  • Bead for Life Programs
  • Guest speakers

These events allow students to become more engaged in the movement of Fair Trade.
