Celebrating Latin Culture
Friday, October 19, 2012
Siena College celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of student events and initiatives, including a lecture and Latin food tasting. The culmination of the celebration was last week’s Latin Fest.
Students filled the Maloney Great Room to enjoy bachata, salsa and merengue music accompanied by dancing. They also sampled Latin food including empanadas, platanos and chimichangas.
Latin Fest brought together students and campus clubs, including the Black and Latino Student Union (BLSU), Latinos Unificando Nuestra América (LUNA) and the Step Team. Along with enjoying food and practicing their dance moves, people participated in a trivia game that included topics ranging from the pre-colonial history of Latin America to modern day celebrities and politics. The game was designed to give participants a better understanding of Latin heritage.
“Latin Fest is a great event to end Hispanic Heritage Month,” said Black and Latino Student Union President Charnelle Franics’14. “We can bring the Siena community together to learn and celebrate many different aspects of Latino culture.”
National Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized across the country from September 15 through October 15.
