Summer of Service Sparks Siena Student Support of Kenyan People Living in Poverty

After their summer of service in Kenya, students from the Siena/Albany Medical College joint acceptance program have launched a fundraising campaign to support the Marigat Catholic Mission and provide meals and medical supplies to people living in the African country.

Student’s Perspective: Service Trip to the DR

Ten Siena students traveled to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic with Assistant Professor of Spanish Marcela Garces, Ph.D., and Assistant Director of the Damietta Cross-Cultural Center Valencia Constant for a service trip last month. New Faculty Member Studies TseTse Fly Biology

In the fall semester of 2013, Dr. Amy Springer joined the Siena biology faculty. She will be teaching course in Microbiology and Cell Biology. Her research, which is funded by a AREA grant from the National Institutes of Health, is aimed at understanding flagellar movement in the African trypansome, the parasite that causes Sleeping Sickness. Last summer, Dr. Sarah Berke and Siena biology majors Caityln Salerno and Chelsea Needham spent 6 weeks at the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences’ Eastern Shore Laboratory researching Interactions between invasive algae and native invertebrates in coastal bays.
