What are people saying?

I would recommend this institute to new and experienced managers and leaders. There were great benefits from spending each day with business professors. They taught me practical tips and skills that I could use right away when I got back to my library.

Emily Scharf, Webster University Libraries

The Siena Leadership Institute for Academic Library Managers was an excellent experience, and one that I would recommend to all library managers.  Since the facilitators are all School of Business faculty, it was extremely helpful to look at management through the lens of management professionals. The group of participants was large enough to get a diversity of backgrounds and experience, yet small enough to discuss topics without getting lost in the crowd.  The week was intense, but extraordinarily helpful. I returned to my institution with a notebook full of ideas and an enthusiasm to manage strategically and to work to the benefit of my staff and my institution.

Nancy Poehlmann, UAlbany

There are leadership institutes…and then some! There’s no dearth of books, articles, webinars on leadership…so what’s so special about this institute? It’s unique because it is focused on academic library leaders only. Another USP for me was, that it was all taught be business school faculty and not library administrators/consultants. It was like getting a mini-MBA with a focus on academic librarianship! Participants staying together definitely enhanced camaraderie outside class time.  Not only the course content from the knowledgeable and engaging instructors was helpful but the discussion among the cohort members was highly enriching.

Moushumi Chakraborty, Salisbury State U

My participation in the Siena Leadership Institute was the most rewarding experience of my professional life. Each session had valuable insights and guidance from the professors that I have brought back to my own institution and began implementing. Furthermore, the bonds forged outside of the sessions helped expand my professional network to areas I never dreamed of and provided me with valued colleagues I can reach out to at any time with questions and concerns. Highly recommended for all academic library managers.”

Andrew Adler, Georgetown College

The Institute gave me a fresh perspective and tools that I quickly put into practice when I went back.

Heather Slania, Maryland Institute College of Art

Attending the institute provided me with the time, resources and support to think objectively about my current strengths and weaknesses as a manager. I came away with some definite ideas about changes I would like to make in how I support and help my staff to grow. I liked that I was fully engaged throughout the day & was encouraged to step outside of my personal comfort zone.

Wendy West, U Albany

My main goal was to answer several questions I had about getting buy-in for a strategic plan. All of those questions were fully answered—and from several perspectives offered by talented Siena College professors using a carefully constructed and beautifully delivered curriculum. The institute was designed to blend our orientations with ideas and principals from disciplines outside of librarianship, and our explorations of strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, decision-making theories, motivational perspectives, and marketing were all stimulating and immediately applicable. It was a perfect union of the theoretical and pragmatic.

Paul Glassman, Yeshiva University
