FAQ Leadership Institute for Academic Library Managers

Who is the intended audience?

Current middle managers and assistant directors who are aspiring to advance their careers in academic library management as well as directors of academic libraries who want to add to their knowledge of management strategies and administrative effectiveness.  Some management experience is preferred but not required.

What is the intended purpose of the Institute?

The program is designed to help participants develop skill set so they can position themselves to be more successful in management and administration at a college or university library.

What topics will be covered?

In general, session will be broken into three major topics: leader development, high-performing teams, and organizational effectiveness. From these three over-arching themes, sessions include such topics as:

  • Assessing your Leadership Style
  • Making Effective Decisions
  • Developing and Executing your Strategy
  • Enhancing your Emotional Intelligence
  • Also, other topics of interest to the students as identified in the first session.

Who will the instructors be?

Business professors from Siena College Institute for Leadership Development who regularly teach management topics. Short biographies of the facilitators are posted on the ILD webpage.

What ensures the coursework is related to academic libraries?

Gary Thompson is a Co-Director for the Institute. He is the retired Director of Siena’s Standish Library who has 44 years of academic library experience. He and his staff work on the readings and course materials to be used in the Institute.

The Siena Leadership Institute for Academic Library Managers was an excellent experience, and one that I would recommend to all library managers.  Since the facilitators are all School of Business faculty, it was extremely helpful to look at management through the lens of management professionals. The group of participants was large enough to get a diversity of backgrounds and experience, yet small enough to discuss topics without getting lost in the crowd.  The week was intense, but extraordinarily helpful. There are leadership institutes…and then some! There’s no dearth of books, articles, webinars on leadership…so what’s so special about this institute? It’s unique because it is focused on academic library leaders only. Another USP for me was, that it was all taught be business school faculty and not library administrators/consultants. It was like getting a mini-MBA with a focus on academic librarianship! Participants staying together definitely enhanced camaraderie outside class time.  Not only the course content from the knowledgeable and engaging instructors was helpful but the discussion among the cohort members was highly enriching.

Where will it be held?

The classes will be held on the campus of Siena College in Loudonville, New York, easily accessible from the New York State Thruway from all directions and a short cab ride from the Albany/Rensselaer Amtrak station.

What is the cost of attendance?

The cost of attendance for the week is $1425 with $125 early registration discount.

  • 5 days on instruction
  • All books and related reading material
  • An opening reception Sunday
