Siena College is honored to have the opportunity to recognize Dr. Joseph M. Pastore, Jr., an outstanding educator and educational leader in the fields of business and higher education administration, and after twenty years of service, Trustee Emeritus and former Chair of the Siena College Board of Trustees.
Dr. Joseph M. Pastore, Jr., is Professor Emeritus in Residence, Lubin School of Business, Pace University. He holds a Bachelor's degree from St. Bonaventure University, an M.B.A. from Pace University, and a Ph.D. from Saint Louis University. He also has engaged extended non-degree programs through Cornell University’s School of Labor Relations and Harvard University. In 2011, Pace University awarded him the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
Dr. Pastore has held tenured faculty appointments at St. Bonaventure University, Pace University, and Boston College for more than four decades, to include academic leadership service at each of those institutions over the course of 25 years. While at St. Bonaventure University, he served as Dean of the School of Business and later as Vice President and Provost. At Pace University, he served as Dean of the Lubin School of Business, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, and University Provost. At Boston College, Dr. Pastore served as Executive Vice President. He was also a Visiting Scholar at the Columbia Business School in 1988.
Dr. Pastore's academic and professional contributions have focused on organizational strategy, social entrepreneurship, dispute resolution, and ethics/public policy in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors. He has authored, co-authored, or edited over forty articles, monographs, papers, book chapters, and essays for both scholarly and journalistic publications, including The New York Times. He has been called upon as a public speaker, to include serving as a keynote speaker at national conferences offered by Case Western Reserve University and the American Accounting Association. For nearly a decade, he conducted a series of annual workshops on corporate ethics for the Institute for Leadership in Technology and Management at Bucknell University. He has lectured in executive development programs for such organizations as Verizon, British Telecommunications, AT&T, Swiss Re, Monsanto, IBM, American Express, and Corning.
Dr. Pastore has engaged dispute resolution service for four decades during which time he has been called upon to arbitrate or mediate over one hundred labor and community disputes. He was named in 1972 to the arbitration panels of the American Arbitration Association and the U.S. Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. His mediation and facilitation work includes an appointment, from 1986-2006, by the U.S. District Court (Southern District of New York) as Monitor and Special Master overseeing the Order to Desegregate the Yonkers Public Schools, Yonkers, New York. He is credited with mediating a $300 million settlement of that case, thereby ending twenty-five years of complex litigation involving the U. S. Department of Justice, the State of New York, the City of Yonkers, the Yonkers Public Schools, and the NAACP.
In addition to his professional contributions, Dr. Pastore has devoted decades of pro bono service on behalf of educational, charitable, social service, and other non-profit organizations. In that capacity, he has served such organizations as the Westchester County Association, the Business Council of Westchester, the Non-Profit Summit of Westchester, the United Way of Westchester/Putnam, and Food Bank of Westchester. His pro bono service in support of social entrepreneurship and the management of non-profit organizations has been supported by grants ranging from $10,000 to $5 million from such sources as the Coleman Foundation, the Kauffman Foundation, the Carlisle Foundation, the Robert Strauss Charitable Trust, and various corporate foundations, all gained on behalf of Pace University.
Dr. Pastore has been active, again on a pro bono basis, in a variety of community and professional organizations to include membership on the Alumni Council of the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University; as a Trustee and former Chair of the Board of Trustees of Siena College; as a member of the Bucknell University Business Advisory Board; as a member of the President's Council, Northern Westchester Hospital Center; as Chair of the Architectural Review Committee for Briarcliff Manor, New York; and, as a Director and current Chair of the Board for Abbott House, a child care agency in Irvington, N.Y.
Dr. Pastore and his wife, Pattie, reside in Briarcliff Manor, New York. They have three adult children and eight grandchildren.
In recognition of his lifetime of achievement and service as an outstanding educator and leader within higher education, Siena College awards Dr. Joseph M. Pastore, Jr., the honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters.
