Mission Statement and Learning Goals

The Department of Sociology at Siena College is a vibrant academic community devoted to the pursuit of a systematic understanding of social groups, social institutions and social processes. The department ensures that our students gain theoretical and methodological grounding, examine social difference and develop critical social sensibilities, and make a difference in their world through civic engagement at the local, regional, national, and international levels.

Learning Goal #1

Students will apply classical and contemporary sociological theories to understand societies.

Learning Goal #2

Students will apply their understanding/ mastery of qualitative, quantitative research methodologies, and SPSS to effectively communicate sociological research findings.

Learning Goal #3

Students will use multiple sociological perspectives to analyze institutions, processes, and culture/s.

Learning Goal #4

Students will critically analyze social problems.

Learning Goal #5

Students will analyze issues of diversity (race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, age) and their impact on global societies.
