TutoringTutoring ServicesCoordinator of Tutoring Services: Holly Cheverton Phone: 782-5769 Tutoring Services are available to all students currently registered students at Siena College. The office is located near the Writing Center in the Standish Library, Lower Level Room L05. Tutoring Services provides group and individual peer tutoring during both the fall and spring semesters. Summer tutoring is available by special arrangement. While most students view tutoring as a mechanism for "fixing" difficult coursework, Tutoring Services can be much more proactive in a student’s academic success. Participating in a group tutoring session can clarify formerly difficult concepts, provide additional study time and, connect students with study partners. When used this way, tutoring enhances academic performance and improves success rather than just ‘fixing’ problems. Students, therefore, are encouraged to use Tutoring Services’ Group Sessions often. Group TutoringWe arrange Group Tutoring sessions are usually available for introductory courses in such subject areas as science, math, accounting, and in statistics and quantitative business analysis. Students may ‘drop-in’ for these sessions where several students receive academic support for a particular subject. These sessions are led by a peer tutors who have completed the course with exceptional achievement and have been recommended by a faculty member. All tutors receive training prior to working as a tutor. We ask students to attend two group sessions, if group sessions are available, before requesting individual tutoring. Group tutoring sessions usually provide the assistance students need, especially since students usually receive individual attention during the group sessions. Students may attend any or all of the group tutoring sessions offered. This service is free to all currently registered students at Siena College, i.e. part-time or full-time, matriculated or non-degree. Individual Peer TutoringTo receive an individual peer tutor, students need to fill out a Tutor Request Form: download a copy here, or pick one up outside of L05 (Library - lower level). Students must attend at least two group tutoring sessions before requesting an individual tutor. Email completed forms to hcheverton@siena.edu or leave in our drop box outside the office door. After submitting a Tutor Request Form, a student will be provided with information regarding tutoring, usually via email. Conferences with the Tutoring Coordinator are also available. It is the student’s responsibility to make the arrangements (time and place) for the weekly tutoring session. Request a tutor early!! Although you students can request a tutor at any time in the semester, tutoring is most effective if you begin early. Don't wait until you develop significant problems!
