RA Selection: Group Process

The group process interview is an opportunity for the Residential Life staff to see how you as a candidate interact with other students through a variety of activities.  The RA role centers on the ability to establish positive relationships with others and build community.  This day allows you to engage in several activities highlighting certain aspects of the RA position including program planning and implementation, group dynamics and conflict, administrative prioritization, and several other activities.

All candidates will be split into smaller groups (approximately 10-15 people per group).  A group leader will accompany you to each of the activities throughout the day.  Each activity will be led by a current member of the Residential Life staff, and will include time at the end for processing and for you to ask any questions that you might have about the activity and/or the RA role.

Group Process will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013.  Please plan on arriving at the New Hall main lobby at 8:30 a.m. for check-in.  Dress code is casual.  Please wear comfortable shoes, as you will be moving throughout the day.  We will be providing you with breakfast.  The day will conclude around 12:30 p.m.

Tips for Success in Group Process:

  • Talk to RAs in your building about their experiences.  They are a wealth of information about the entire RA selection process!
  • Know (and use) your strengths.  We do not expect you to be an expert in all of the activities during group process.  If you feel confident and comfortable in an activity, speak up.
  • Act like you normally would!  We want you to act natural and respond in a manner that you feel appropriate.
  • Engage with your team.  Group process is a chance for us to see how you interact with others, some of whom might be your fellow RAs next year.

If you have any additional questions about group process, please contact Adam Casler at 518-782-8155 or Katie Wolanin at 518-782-6104.
