PDAs and Smartphones

ITS provides only limited support for Personal Data Assistants (PDAs) and smartphones (including Blackberries).

We recommend that any PDA or smartphone uses the Windows Mobile 5 operating system. This works seamlessly with Siena's technology environment and is easy to set-up and maintain.  It also allows you to access your Outlook calendar and address book in addition to e-mail.

ITS can provide support and advice on setting up your connection if you use these devices (See "Configuring your PDA" below).  Contact your wireless provider for information about which models they offer with Windows Mobile, or check the Windows Mobile Webpage.

ITS will install software on Siena-owned computers for devices with other operating systems (Palm OS, Blackberry). However, we don't have the resources to provide technical support.  Contact your vendor if you have problems.

Configuring your Windows Mobile PDA

To set up your e-mail, calendar, and contacts on your Microsoft Mobile 5 PDA, tap on "Start," "Programs," and run "ActiveSync."  Select "Menu," and "Configure Server."  The screens below will display:

Server address: imail.siena.edu Encrypted connection: checked Click "Next"	User name: Your userID Password: Your password Domain: sienaservices Save Password checked Click "Next."	Check the data you want to synchronize (Most people check all four). Click on "Finish."

Once you have clicked "Finish," ActiveSync will download your e-mail and contacts to your PDA.

PDA Password Protection

To set up password protection (Microsoft Mobile):

1. Tap "Menu"
2. Tap "Settings"
3. Tap "Lock" (some version of Microsoft Mobile has "Password" instead)
4. You will see the password settings screen. Tap on "Prompt if device unused for."
5. On the dropdown list to the right, select how long before you want to be prompted.  You will also be prompted automatically when you turn on the device.
6. Choose the password type.  "Simple PIN" is fine.
7. Enter a number in the "Password" field.
8. Reenter the number in the "Confirm" field.
9. At the bottom of the screen, tap "Hint."
10. Enter a password hint.  This can be used if you forget your PIN.
11. Tap "OK."
12. You will be asked to confirm.  Tap "Yes."

Your phone will now use the PIN on startup and after the time limit you selected.
