Janet L. Shideler joined the Department of Modern Languages and began serving as Dean of Liberal Arts in August 2012. Prior to that, she was Associate Dean at SUNY Empire State College. She has also worked extensively in international programs and exchanges and in the area of Canadian Studies.
Although she is a generalist who teaches French language, literature and culture courses for students at all levels of proficiency, her area of specialization is Francophonie: the study of the culture, history and literature of French-speaking people outside of France. As a result, she has developed “study away” courses to Louisiana, North Africa and the Caribbean. Her research focuses primarily on Franco-Americans: immigrants and descendants of immigrants who came from French Canada to the Northeastern United States.
