Siena faculty, staff and students planning to use human subjects in a study must receive approval from the Human Subjects Research Review Committee (IRB) prior to initiating any research activities, on or off campus.
There are two (2) methods of review depending on the degree of risk to subject(s): expedited and full review.

Student Initiated Research under Faculty Supervision
If there are any faculty members requiring students in their classes to serve as a Principal Investigator (PI) in a human subject research project under faculty supervision, it is imperative that you read the following:
Please make sure that students submit a complete and signed IRB application along with a survey or instrumentation to be utilized to collect data. All applications must be typewritten. Handwritten applications will not be accepted for review.
Please make sure that students do not Goggle the Siena IRB application since it is likely that they may retrieve an older version. Older IRB application versions will not be accepted for review. Please select the most recent IRB application from the related links menu.
Explain to students that a typical expedited review takes five days to complete before a decision is rendered. The IRB will not make any exception for applications that are time sensitive. It is the responsibility of the student and faculty member to submit the IRB application in a timely manner.
Inform your students that approval of IRB projects will be sent via email to the PI listed on the IRB coversheet. After the application has been reviewed and approved, it is the responsibility of the PI to inform the other co-PIs of the IRB decision.
Please make sure as the faculty supervisor that you have reviewed and signed the IRB application before it is submitted for screening and review. If the application is submitted incomplete and not signed by both the PI and faculty supervisor, it is likely that the application may get delayed beyond the typical 5 day review period for expedited review. The suggested 5 day review time for full review applications does not apply.
