Why so expensive?
ITS goal is to have Dell offer a computer that won't become obsolete in four years. This recommended configuration will ensure a maximum of computing power with a minimum of problems. For instance, this model has twice the memory, bigger hard drive, and a faster processor than cheaper laptops.
In addition, four years of complete, on-site service — including repair of accidental damage — is provided by Dell. If there's a problem, it's covered.

What about antivirus?

Any Siena student (including incoming freshmen) or employee may order a computer through the program.
Note: Employees may buy these computer for personal use. Work computers connected to the Siena College network need to be purchased through ITS. ITS will not support any computers purchased through this program.
No. You may purchase any computer, either from Dell or from any other vendors. The purchase program is offered as a convenience.
The standard configuration has customization options when you order it. If you prefer something else from Dell, you are still eligible for a discount on other models.
Click on the link on the Computer Purchase page. When you reach Dell, click on "Read More." This will take you to Dell's main page, and your discount will be automatically applied. You must go through Siena Computer Purchase Program link in order to receive your discount.
Technical support and service is provided by Dell. Contact them to resolve any problems. If it's a hardware issue, Dell will come on campus to make needed repairs. If the computer has been damaged, they may require you to send it to them for assessment and repair.
Note: Siena College ITS is not involved and does not make repairs on these or other computers. You must contact Dell or the manufacturer directly, not the Siena Helpdesk.
Contact Dell. Siena is not part of the transaction other than providing the link to Dell. Any issues with ordering should be taken up with Dell. You can e-mail Dell's Siena sales rep at firstname.lastname@example.org or call Dell at 1-888-973-3355.
All college-owned computer purchases must go through ITS; departments should not use this program to buy computers for departmental use. ITS will not support or maintain any computers purchased directly through Dell. If you have any questions, contact ITS at x5000.
Individuals connected to the college may use the program to buy computers for their own personal use, however.
Have Dell deliver the computer to your home address. This will allow you to use it and make sure the software has all necessary updates before coming to campus. It usually takes about a week from the initial order to delivery.
No. You can, however, order a printer when purchasing the laptop. We do recommend that students bring a printer with their computer.
You will need to purchase a network cable to connect to Siena's network; they are available at any computer dealer and at the Siena College bookstore.
What about Apple computers?
There is a link on the laptop purchase page that takes you to the Apple store, where you can get a student discount. Note that the computers listed do not include Office; you will need to purchase Office 2008 or some other program at some point. Also, the price does not include an extended waranty, though it can be purchased.
