Computer Maintenance and Security

Computers require regular maintenance to work properly and to keep them secure.  These pages will give information about keeping your computer running in top shape and avoiding problems.

Updates:
The following elements must be kept up-to-date to help keep your computer safe and  running properly:

Spyware:
Spyware is a real threat that can devastate a computer. Luckily, it is 100% avoidable:

  • File-sharing programs (Limewire, Ares, Morpheus, Bit Torrent, etc.) are the biggest source of infections. They should not be used.
  • Adult websites, gambling websites and many gaming websites are fraught with peril. Avoidance is the best rule-of-thumb.
  • Any website offering “freebies” (screensavers, fancy toolbars, for example) can and often does install some spyware along with them. Be careful. Do you really need these items?
  • Facebook and other social networking sites are being heavily targeted by hackers. While they are OK in and of themselves, much care needs to be exercised while visiting them. The Fake-Alert virus oftentimes comes from there. Read more about it. Keeping your system up-to-date is the best defense.
