Siena Season So Far

Siena Season So Far

By Lee Whittemore

Fans of the Siena Men’s basketball team entered the season with low expectations, seeing a preseason full of ineligibility issues and long term injuries, but the team has proven them wrong, starting off a quick 2-0 with wins over Navy and Mount St. Mary’s. The Saints saw scoring from everyone on the team between the two games, including freshmen Evan Hymes, Rob Poole, and Davonte Beard. Hymes scored 30 in the win over Mount Saint Mary’s.

The Saints have since hit a harsh spot in their schedule, dropping the next three to St. Bonaventure, Georgia Tech and Vermont. They opened up MAAC play with a loss at St. Peter’s on Thursday, Dec. 1, creating a four game losing streak.

The freshmen have been stellar so far, gaining experience very quickly and putting up big numbers. Junior forward, OD Anosike, though starting off slow, has since picked up his play, recording double-doubles in his past two games.

As if the preseason problems weren’t enough, senior Owen Wignot left the game against Navy with a head injury after making a layup and getting fouled. He hasn’t returned since, making depth on the bench and an even bigger problem. Since the injury, the Saints have only played 2 people off their bench, causing starters to play upwards around 35 minutes per game. The Saints continue conference play when they host Loyola on Saturday Dec. 3.
