Sociology at Siena

Structure, processes, factors and institutions that shape everyday life

Major and Minor offered

There isn’t much that we do that doesn’t fall under the purview of sociological observation. Society’s cultures, their interactions, micro and macro activity, politics, religions, economics, behaviors and more are analyzed, defined and assessed by social scientists across the globe.

Siena’s sociology students learn to:
  • Critically observe the social world and its many influencing factors
  • Understand sociological explanations of society’s structure and processes
  • Recognize the differences between individual behavior and the larger social structure
  • Use modern research methodologies and data analysis
  • Evaluate the way people and organizations make decisions
  • Examine quantitative data

Sociology majors and minors develop critical analytical, written and verbal communication skills. They take advantage of internship experiences across several areas of concentration. And, they conduct an original research project as they develop sociological inquiry skills.

The breadth, adaptability and utility of sociology provides students with extensive opportunities for employment in social services, community work, criminal justice, business, academia, health services, journalism, public relations, government, teaching and many other fields.
