Social Work at Siena
Make a difference in peoples' lives and the world
Major offered
Social Work is a profession that addresses social problems by working with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. It focuses upon the strengths of those being served, fosters empowerment in the face of life’s challenges, and advocates for social and economic justice. Students completing the Baccalaureate Social Work (BSW) Program are recognized as entry-level professionals, who can directly enter the work force and begin to make a difference in people’s lives.
Our graduates also go on for further education in a number of fields of professional helping: from graduate social work education (MSW degree) to law schools. Articulation agreements and advanced standing status with other colleges can be advantageous to students who wish to pursue graduate study.
The Social Work program at Siena teaches students the knowledge, skills, values and ethics needed to effectively work in a variety of settings and with varied populations. Examples include: health care, child protective services, youth programs, mental health, poverty, older persons, substance abuse and more.
Students also learn by doing. Social work majors participate in internships, community projects, and a 400 hour senior year Field Education experience (2 days/week for the entire academic year) in the Capital Region. Faculty-sponsored research, the Social Work club, and community and campus events also expand students’ experiential learning.
The Social Work Program has been accredited by the Council on Social Work Education since 1985 and is committed to graduating students of the highest caliber, who desire to improve conditions that enhance the quality of life for people in need.
