Revolutionary Era Studies at Siena
The Certificate in Revolutionary Era Studies (CRES) is open to all Siena students interested in the American Revolution.
Students in the CRES program complete six courses (18-credits), including colonial America, Revolutionary America, and three electives from a pre-approved list that includes courses in English, Political Science, Creative Arts, Sociology, Education, and Environmental Studies. CRES students also complete a required internship (3-credits) at a historic site of their choosing. Nearly a third of the battles fought in the American Revolution were fought in New York and today the landscape of upstate New York is dotted with colonial and revolutionary historic sites, including Saratoga National Historical Park, site of the Battle of Saratoga (1777).
Internships are an ideal way for undergraduate students to gain practical job experience. CRES internships give students the opportunity to try out careers in public history, museum education, or historic preservation. At Saratoga Battlefield interns have worked in the park's extensive archives under the tutelage of the park's historian and uncovered information that has contributed to the development of new exhibits and programming for the general public. One CRES student developed an exhibit on the Battle of Saratoga's "camp followers," women and children who followed their husbands and fathers to the battle. Another student developed a podcast for park visitors and another participated in the park's living history programming. CRES internships can be tailored for Business and Science majors so that they too can practice their skills and gain real-world job experience. For examples, Marketing majors who undertake a CRES internship can develop a marketing plan for a local historic site, and Environmental Science majors can work with local land preservation and conservation groups.
