Hostile Intruder / Active Shooter
Hostile Intruder / Active Shooter
In general, how you respond to an active shooter/hostile intruder will be dictated by the specific circumstances of the encounter. If you find yourself involved in this situation, try to remain calm and use these guidelines:
If an active shooter / hostile intruder is outside the building:
- Seek cover immediately in an attempt to conceal yourself. If able, go to a room that can be locked or barricaded and turn off all lights
- Get down on the floor to reduce your visibility from outside
- Dial 911 from campus phone or 518-783-2999 from your cell phone and advise Dispatcher of your situation and location
- Silence your cell phone and remain quiet
- Remain in place until given "all clear" from Public Safety and/or law enforcement personnel
If an active shooter / hostile intruder is inside the building:
- Seek cover immediately to conceal and hide from the shooter. Follow the same procedures listed above.
- If your room cannot be locked, determine if there is a nearby location that can be reached safely and secured, or if you can safely exit the building
- Dial 911 from a campus phone or 518-783-2999 from your cell phone. If you are able to safely speak, notify the Dispatcher of your situation and location. If you can't speak, leave the line open so the dispatcher can listen to what's taking place
- If you decide to flee during an active shooting situation, move quickly and carry nothing with you. Do not attempt to removed injured people; proceed to a safe location and follow the instructions of Public Safety and/or law enforcement personnel
