Fair Trade Chocolate Tasting with Bowman Center Staff
Is there slavery in your chocolate? Want to try some great fair trade chocolate and learn how to really taste chocolate? Like fine wine, many things affect the final product: the blend of cacao beans, the percentage of cacao, the region where the beans were grown, as well as the timing and manner of the roasting and drying processes. Join us for an informative session with Center staff. 7pm in the Hennepin lower lounge.

Look for us at the Club Fair and Block Party
Sign up for the Bowman Committees (Non-Violence, Global Concerns, Health and Wellness). Sign a petition to protest the use of child slavery by Hershey and Nestle. 3:30-6:30pm in the Quad. The US Department of State estimates that more than 109,000 children in Cote d’Ivoire’s cocoa industry work under “the worst forms of child labor,” and that some 10,000 are victims of human trafficking or enslavement. Recently, an Interpol-led operation conducted by the Cote d'Ivoire police resulted in the rescue of more than 50 children and the arrest of at least eight individuals for the illegal recruitment of children.

Shoeboxes for Orphans in Zimbabwe are due! Help local organization The Dangwa Initiative to aid children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Pack a shoebox or ziplock baggie with school supplies, personal hygiene items and toys. Drop boxes are located in SSU. email soneill@siena.edu for more information

Monday Oct. 12th - Veronica Leyva—Juarez: Drugs, Militarization, Maquiladoras and Mass Murder of Women— Leyva is a grassroots organizer in Juarez, Mexico. She spent 10 years working in maquiladoras, and has been organizing in her community for 15 years conducting workshops on worker's and women's rights. She has also been involved with the struggle for justice for the victims of the femicides in Ciudad Juarez. 7pm in SSU 243. (Co-sponsor with OMA and Plassman Hall Staff)
Wednesday Oct. 21st -Capital Region Action Against Breast Cancer—Risk Reduction and Nutrition. A nutritionist and members of CRAAB! will address ways to reduce the risk of breast cancer. 7pm in SSU 241. (Co-sponsor with Campus Programs)

Monday Oct. 26-30th - Nancy Bruno's Genuine Men Project (a book and photographic stills) will be displayed in SSU. Coffee and cake reception Tuesday Oct 27th @4pm in SSU 240 with Nancy and some of the Siena men featured in the book.
Tuesday Oct 27th - Democracy in the Age of Obama: Possibilities and Pitfalls - Professor Carmen Sirianni, professor of Sociology and Public Policy at Brandeis University. Sponsored by Sociology, Environmental Studies, Globalization, FCSA VISTA Fellows, and the Center for the Study of Government and Politics.

Monday Nov. 2nd - Indigenous Community Organizing for Energy and Climate Justice— Jihan Gearon is Diné (Navajo) and African American. In her position as Native Energy Organizer at the Indigenous Environmental Network, Jihan works to build the capacity of communities throughout the U.S. and Canada who are impacted by energy development and climate change.
