Siena’s Fine Art Collections encompass a broad range of periods and styles, with fine paintings, works on paper, sculpture, and artifacts. Original works from historic and contemporary artists are displayed throughout the campus. Among these are several excellent pieces of the Hudson River School, quality 19th century copies of Renaissance religious paintings, and a diverse body of work recently acquired from local contemporary artists.

The Collection originated in the late 1950s largely through the interest of financier Pierre Bretey, who donated a substantial number of works from his private collection. An investment advisor in railroad securities, he began collecting during the Depression. Father Maurus A. Kennedy O.F.M., treasurer of Siena College from 1957 – 1965, met Mr. Bretey while studying at New York University, and generated his interest in Siena.

Noting that “At the time, Siena had nothing in the way of art,” Bretey commenced a donation of art that spanned many years, from 1957 through 1974. Through his generosity, the College acquired works by Inness, Ritter, European religious paintings and landscapes as well as many examples of fine furniture and decorative arts.

Other major donors to the Collection include Joseph Tessitore, an alumnus of Siena with interest in collecting original prints, particularly those of LeRoy Neiman. His contribution to the collection includes over 50 original, signed serigraphs, as well as several original oil paintings and etchings from his estate. A number of works by Michael and Jasper SanFratello, brothers of Fr. Sennen SanFratello O.F.M., have been added to the collections through family donation, and several works by the late Fr. Felton Robertson O.F.M., donated by the artist, also feature prominently in Siena’s holdings.

The construction of the Standish Library in 1999 led to the acquisition of 23 works by local contemporary artists and the installation of a mural on the second floor landing. On display throughout the Library, these pieces include paintings, works on paper, prints, photographs, and sculpture.

The College continues to add to its Collections, both through donation and purchase of art. Recent acquisitions include the painting “Moment of Death” by Iranian artist Kayvan Asgari, a group of original signed prints, and two works by Fr. Miguel Loredo O.F.M., “Cristal Verde” and “Red Paradise.” Beginning with the Spring 2007 semester, the College will also begin a program in the acquisition of exemplary student work through the Creative Arts Department.
