Direct Access Program

WHAT IS DAP?

The Direct Access Program (DAP) is a voluntary arrangement by which area libraries provide their patrons with "direct access" to the collections of other libraries in the Capital District Library Council (CDLC). The program is designed to facilitate research beyond the usual resource-sharing guidelines of CDLC.  The cooperation of users determines the success of this program because libraries are not obligated to honor a DAP card if the borrower does not observe the regulations of the LENDING library.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Siena College provides DAP cards to current Siena students and employees, plus emeritus faculty.

Others wishing to get a DAP card (St. Bernard's Institute students and faculty, Siena alumni, and anyone else) can get one at their local public library or whichever academic library with which they are associated.

Siena College accepts valid DAP cards from other libraries for checking out Standish Library materials.  Anyone wishing to use DAP to check out materials from Siena should present a current DAP card and provide contact information.

WHAT ARE THE RULES?

The most important things to remember are: 1) the rules and regulations of the LENDING library apply, not those of the borrower's home library; and 2) the individual borrower is responsible for learning and abiding by those rules and regulations.  Loan periods, fines, policies, and procedures WILL vary from library to library and it is the individual borrower's obligation to keep track of them.  Each library reserves the right to rescind the DAP card of anyone it determines is abusing the DAP borrowing privileges.

Unlike interlibrary loan or ConnectNY transactions, in a DAP transaction the patron is responsible for the material s/he borrows from the time of checkout at the lending library until the moment the material is checked back in at the lending library.  Siena's Interlibrary Loan Department will return to its home library any DAP item found turned in at the Standish Library, but accepts no responsibility for charges should the item be lost, damaged, or returned to the lending library past the due date.
