Recent Programs

The Kieval Institute Town of Colonie Jewish Association Lecture took place on Thursday, April 14, 2011. Dr. Jack Mayer presented the program "Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project." An extraordinary story of heroism during the Holocaust, Life in a Jar also chronicles its transformative role in the lives of three high school students in contemporary Kansas. It is based on the true but little-known story of Irena Sendler, a Polish Catholic rescuer of Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto, and of the young students in Kansas who rescued this history. Jack Mayer masterfully weaves these two separate but intimately connected stories into one larger saga that provides us swith a unique lens into the Holocaust and its meaning and relevance in today's world.

Previous Fall Colloquia

The Kieval Institute sponsors annual colloquia, open to all who are interested in a frank and stimulating discussion of academic issues pertinent to Jewish-Christian studies.  The colloquia attract participants from throughout the region, with interested clergy and laity from New York City, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts joining residents of the Capital District, as well as Siena faculty and students, in these discussions. From the beginning, these discussions have been both ecumenical and interfaith--not only have the colloquia featured the finest Jewish and Christian scholars, but the audience participants as well have come from the entire range of the community.
